A recent yale graduate stabbed a student before jumping to his death from a ninth-floor window in the Taft Apartments on May 26. Tyler Carlisle ’15 had just graduated the week before and was preparing to enter military service. The victim of the stabbing, Alexander Michaud ’17, was in stable condition at Yale–New Haven Hospital after the incident.

After mounting criticism of Yale College’s policies on withdrawal and readmission, the university announced in April that it would make it easier logistically and financially for students to withdraw and to be reinstated. Some graduating seniors had withheld fund-raising contributions because of concerns about Yale’s response to these and other mental-health issues.

A “carbon tax” may be in the future for Yale departments. A task force led by economist William Nordhaus ’63 recommended in April that units of the university be charged when they increase their carbon emissions and given rebates when they reduce them. A three-year pilot project will begin this fall; the plan is intended to help Yale reduce its overall carbon footprint.

Yale will hire 500 New Haven residents over the next two years, Vice President Bruce Alexander ’65 said in a letter to city officials in June. The letter said that at least 100 of those jobs will be in construction projects, and that the university will also encourage its suppliers to hire residents of the city. Local activists have been urging New Haven employers to hire locally.
