Lots of chimneys, but not so many fireplaces in the new residential colleges.

As work continues on Yale’s new residential colleges, we couldn’t help noticing that many of their 45 chimneys appear to have a certain gravity-defying quality. (They were, in fact, built on the ground and lifted into place with cranes.) Most of them are functional, though, either serving fireplaces in the college common rooms and masters’ houses or concealing mechanical vents. No word on whether they meet Santa Claus specifications.
