Room with a view

It’s hard to go through Yale College without taking at least one course in LC 102, the largest lecture room in the Old Campus’s Linsly-Chittenden Hall. But twentieth-century alums might not remember it looking like this: prior to a 1998 restoration, the ornament had been lost, its stained-glass window hidden behind black curtains, and the ceiling covered with sound-deadening (and soul-crushing) acoustical tiles.

Elegant appointments like the corner fireplace and the Tiffany stained glass window hark back to the room's first life: it was the main reading room when Chittenden Hall was built in 1890 as the university library. (Administrators resolved to remove the valuable Tiffany window for safekeeping amid the campus tumult of 1970, but they got the wrong window.)
