Alleluia! at Carnegie Hall

June 29, 2015 at 7:30 pm
Carnegie Hall 57th Street and Seventh Avenue, New York City

The Center for Music and Liturgy, recently established at Saint Thomas More Chapel and Center at Yale University, is pleased to announce a gala inaugural concert in the Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall in New York on Monday, June 29 at 7:30 p.m. Entitled Alleluia!, the celebration unites several of the world’s leading choirs in an International Festival Chorus of 400 voices with 600 hand bells and a symphony orchestra for the world première of the Mass of the Divine Shepherd, composed by Julian Darius Revie '02, the Center’s composer in residence. Mass of the Divine Shepherd is a large-scale choral composition that combines intricate and haunting sections with beautiful and memorable melodies set to the new revised English Order of Mass. It is the first concert mass to be written for the new translation, which was mandated by the Vatican in 2012. “This mass is particularly special,” said Richard Gard "07 D.M.A., Director of Music for the Center for Music and Liturgy. “The concert mass had fallen out of favor with composers over the past one hundred years. In previous centuries, all composers created music in this genre, whether they were inclined to sacred music or not. So, it seemed especially fitting to promote and perform this genre, since there have been no major new works using the English translation, since its adoption over two years ago.” The concert will also feature traditional sacred music favorites by Bach, Mozart and Bruckner. In keeping with the mission of the Center for Music and Liturgy, all of the music performed in the concert will be available for free. Tickets for Alleluia! are available on the Carnegie Hall website at www.Carnegiehall.com and information about the Center for Music and Liturgy can be found on the Center’s website www.music-and-liturgy.org.
