While studying at Yale, McKee left school to serve in the United States Merchant Marines during World War II where he achieved the rank of Licensed Third Assistant Engineer. In his spare time, McKee enjoyed several hobbies, primarily fishing, and fly tying in both fresh and salt water. McKee also loved listening to classical music and wood carving duck decoys as beautiful decorative pieces.
