In addition to developing the collection’s home at 15 Hillhouse Avenue into a gallery for rare and prized instruments and initiating a series of concerts at the collection, Rephann was a performer and an adjunct professor at the School of Music.
Arthur Howe Jr. ’43, who served as dean of undergraduate admissions from 1954 to 1964, died on December 16 at age 93. Although Howe had a more conservative approach to admissions reform than his successor, R. Inslee Clark Jr. ’57, the democratization of Yale College began in Howe’s tenure. He began advocating the admission of women to the college as early as 1956. After leaving Yale, Howe was president of the American Field Service, an international student-exchange program.
Robert Reed ’62MFA, a professor at the School of Art, died of cancer on December 26. He was 76 years old. Reed joined the art faculty in 1969. He directed the Yale Summer School of Art in Norfolk, Connecticut, from 1970 to 1974. He also taught introductory courses in drawing and painting to generations of Yale College students. Reed’s own paintings are in the collections of the Whitney and Hirshhorn Museums, among others.
RetiringJoseph Gordon ’78PhD, deputy dean of Yale College since 1998, will retire next January. Gordon, who came to Yale as a graduate student in English in 1970 and became an assistant professor in 1976, has served in a number of roles in the college, most recently dean of undergraduate education. He served as acting master of Pierson College in 1987–88 and as acting dean of Yale College in 2007.
