Yan Fuqing 1909MD, the first Asian student to graduate from the Yale School of Medicine, took what he had learned back to his native China. Yan became a founder of both the Xiang-Ya School of Medicine—a school launched by the Yale-China Association—and the Shanghai Medical College at Fudan University,
where he was the first dean. In October, Yale celebrated Yan’s contributions with the unveiling of a bust of his likeness (above) at the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library. Officials from China and members of Yan’s family were on hand for the event.
