Light & VerityIn like a lionCelebrating Chinese New Year in New Haven. Michael MarslandView full image
It may have been Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney, but the furry celebrity in New Haven on February 2 was a spangled yellow lion dancing up the street—a time-honored ritual of the Chinese New Year but a first for the Elm City. Trailed by drummers, banner carriers, and hundreds of curious pedestrians, the lion accepted red envelopes of money fed to it by visitors hoping to garner good luck in the new year. Performed by a dance troupe from New York's Chinatown, the dance was sponsored by the Yale-China Association.
