Paul North, professor of Germanic languages and literatures, is the new head of Jonathan Edwards College, succeeding W. Mark Saltzman. ElectedAlumni chose Fred Krupp ’75, president of the Environmental Defense Fund, for a six-year term on Yale’s Board of Trustees in this spring’s election. Krupp was selected over Jessica Herrera-Flanigan ’92, a vice president of Twitter, and Daniel H. Weiss ’85MPPM, president and CEO of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. RememberedJohn M. Merriman, the Charles Seymour Professor of History, died on May 22. He was 75. Merriman, who joined the Yale faculty in 1973, was an authority on nineteenth-century French history. His textbook History of Modern Europe From the Renaissance to the Present is in its fourth edition. He was also an esteemed teacher: he won the Byrnes/Sewall Teaching Prize in 2000 and the DeVane Medal in 2019. He was master of Branford College from 1983 to 1991.
