Natures of ornament

On February 23, the school held a symposium gathering a group of speakers from a wide range of disciplines, including many alumni, for a celebration of sculptor and ornament theorist Kent Bloomer ’61MFA. The event took the form of a Festschrift in honor of Bloomer’s accomplishments and interests, and featured presentations on architectural ornament, avian plumage, and even a jazz performance. Bloomer will retire this summer after more than 50 years as a faculty member at the Yale School of Architecture.

Frank O. Gehry Scholarships

A recent gift to the school will establish scholarships for master of architecture students in the name of architect and frequent visiting faculty member Frank Gehry. The $5 million gift, donated by Richard D. Cohen on the occasion of Gehry’s 90th birthday, is the largest single gift for financial aid at the school. Gehry has regularly taught at the school as a visiting faculty member since 1979, with his most recent Advanced Studio in 2017 now the focus of a documentary film.
