Radical Italian design

The Yale School of Architecture hosts the exhibition Radical: Italian Design 1965–1985, The Dennis Freedman Collection from February 21 to May 7. Originating with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the exhibition features nearly 70 pieces of furniture, lighting design, and architectural models from the Dennis Freedman Collection. Rare prototypes, one-of-a-kind, and limited edition works by architects, designers, and collectives such as Archizoom AssociatiLapo Binazzi, Ugo La Pietra, Alessandro Mendini, Gianni Pettena, Ettore Sottsass, Studio AlchimiaSuperstudio, and others are on view.

Soil sisters

Faculty members Hines Professor Anna Dyson ’96MArch and Mae-ling Lokko have been awarded the 2021 SOM Foundation Research Prize for their project “Soil Sisters: An Intersectoral Material Design Framework for Soil Health.” This effort aims to improve soil nutrition and resiliency by the design and provision of new biomaterial construction systems.

Object lessons

Object Lessons, the Spring 2022 J. Irwin Miller Symposium, gathers designers and scholars around questions of material pedagogy—the use of objects to teach—to explore the value of this method in untangling the larger material and spatial histories embodied in everyday things. Convened by Daniel Rose ’51 Visiting Professor Anthony Acciavattion April 8 and 9, the symposium will move between spaces in Paul Rudolph Hall with participants presenting on different instructional objects.
