Architecture in the Eternal City

This summer, 30 Yale School of Architecture students will participate in the annual Rome seminar "Continuity and Change." The Rome Seminar is an intensive four-week workshop in Rome designed to provide a broad overview of that city’s major architectural sites, topography, and systems of urban organizations. For the tenth year, Alec Purves '58, '65MArch, and Stephen Harby '76, '80MArch, will lead the Rome seminar, joined this year by Victor Agran '97MArch. The Rome Seminar is made possible through the generosity of Frannie and Gordon Burns '75 and Edward P. Bass '68, '72ArtA.

Student travel awards

Three outstanding students of architecture have been awarded summer fellowships. Can Vu Bui '12 and Thomas Fryer '12 have won George Nelson Scholarships, enabling them to pursue their research overseas. Vu Bui will use his award to travel to France to study "Les Banlieues: Modern Housing Projects and an Evolving Urban Form." Fryer will explore "Rogelio Salmona and the Trajectory of Urban-Social Intervention in Colombia." Salmona (1929–2007) was an award-winning architect based primarily in Bogotá. The third student, Ashley Lauren Ozburn '12, has won the David M. Schwarz ('74MArch) Internship and will spend part of the summer at David M. Schwarz Architectural Services, Inc. in Washington, DC, before undertaking a one-month study tour.

New endowments

Recent gifts to the school from the New Haven architecture firm Pickard Chilton will provide financial help to architecture students and support exhibitions at the school. The Pickard Chilton Fellowship will provide financial aid to one or more master of architecture students each year, and the Pickard Chilton Dean’s Resources Fund will primarily provide support for the fabrication and installation of exhibitions in the Rudolph Hall gallery. Pickard Chilton, founded by Jon Pickard '79MArch and William D. Chilton, also made substantial gifts to the University of Minnesota and Iowa State University.
