Convocation launches anniversary celebration

This year’s convocation on September 5 marked the start of a yearlong observance of the school’s 125-year history. University president Peter Salovey and President Emeritus Richard Levin offered remarks during a program that also featured musical performances, a speech by School of Music dean Robert Blocker, and the installation of the incoming class. Faculty, staff, and new students attended this year’s ceremony along with members of Yale’s Class of 1957, which helped establish the Music in Schools Initiative; the school’s board of advisors; and other special guests. Faculty composer Martin Bresnick was awarded the Samuel Simons Sanford Medal, the school’s highest honor. A reception was held in the Sterling Memorial Library nave.

Alumni reunions on campus and across the country

In October, for the first time in decades and in celebration of YSM’s 125th anniversary, the school hosted graduates from a range of classes during a two-day alumni reunion. Event activities included an alumni concert in Morse Recital Hall, a panel discussion about women composers, a tour of the YSM campus, and more.

The reunion event in New Haven was preceded by a gathering in Washington, DC, in late September. The school plans to hold an event in Los Angeles in mid-January.
