Accolades for faculty composer

Professor David Lang ’83MusAM, ’89MusAD, has been named Composer of the Year for 2013 by Musical America. The annual Musical America Awards, which recognize artistic excellence and achievement, were presented in a special ceremony at Lincoln Center on December 6. The announcement coincided with the publication of the 2013 Musical America International Directory of the Performing Arts, which pays homage to the selected artists in its editorial pages. In addition, Lang is the 2013–2014 Richard and Barbara Debs Composer’s Chair at Carnegie Hall. The residency will feature multiple performances of Lang’s work from across his illustrious career. Lang is the winner of the 2008 Pulitzer Prize in music.

 

Students and alumni win competitions

Pianist Lo-An Lin ’14MusM took home the gold medal from the 2012 San Antonio International Piano Competition in October. Lin also won the prize for Best Performance of a Baroque Work. Mei Rui ’06MusM, ’07ArtA, earned Special Recognition and the award for Best Performance of a Classical Work. As the gold medal winner, Lin received a cash prize and multiple performance opportunities, including an appearance with the San Antonio Symphony.

At the sixth China Shanghai International Piano Competition, held in November, Henry Kramer ’13ArtA and Wenbin Jin ’09CertPF were jointly awarded the second prize. The first prize was not awarded. Both also won additional prizes: Wenbin Jin for Best Performance of the Chinese Commissioned Work and Best Chinese Contestant, and Henry Kramer for Best Performance of Lieder.

Lee Dionne ’11 (ES), ’13MusM, won third prize in the James Mottram International Piano Competition, held in November at the Northern Royal College of Music. Flutist Yoobin Son ’09MusM and cellist Patrick Jee ’03MusM are the newest members of the New York Philharmonic. In November both won positions in the nation’s oldest orchestra.
