Addressing bias in the health professions
Dean Ann Kurth ’90MSN and Stephan Davis ’16DNP recently contributed to a new report from the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation. The document issues a set of national recommendations to guide health-care leaders and professionals on how to address harmful bias and eliminate discrimination within health professions’ learning environments to ensure that everyone who receives care and everyone who learns, teaches, and works in clinical environments is treated equitably and feels a sense of belonging. The report dovetails with YSN’s June Initial Anti-Racist Action Plan, and with the President’s Committee on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging, on which Dean Kurth participated.
Nursing Academy honors three at YSN
Three YSN affiliates were recently honored as fellows in the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN): Beth Beckman, associate dean for partnerships at YSN; associate professor of nursing Marianne J. Davies, ’87MSN, ’00PMC; and Joan Kearney, chair of the doctor of nursing practice program and associate professor of nursing. Fellows are selected through a rigorous competitive process, and new fellows are chosen annually based on their contributions to the advancement of the public’s health. Induction is a significant milestone in a nurse leader’s career, marking the esteem and regard of their peers within the profession.
