Honors for alumni artists

Five School of Art alumni are among eight New York City artists to receive 2015 Emerging Artist Grants from the Rema Hort Mann Foundation: Troy Michie, ’11MFA and a 2008 alumnus of the Yale Norfolk Summer School of Art; Aaron Fowler ’14MFA, also a Norfolk alumnus; Kenya Robinson ’13MFA; Kenny Rivero ’12MFA; and Leeza Meksin ’07MFA. Each artist received a $10,000 unrestricted award from the foundation, which offers eight grants in New York City and eight in Los Angeles each year. There were 197 applications for the award in 2015.

Njideka Akunyili Crosby ’11MFA can add two new honors to her résumé: the Joyce Alexander Wein Prize from the Studio Museum in Harlem, and the Next Generation Award from the New Museum. The Wein Prize, established in 2006, provides a $50,000 award to an African American artist who demonstrates great promise and creativity. The Next Generation Award recognizes emerging artists; Crosby was one of two honored this year.
