Two juniors named Truman Scholars
Juniors Alie Brussel Faria and Eli Sabin are among 62 college students nationwide selected as 2021 Truman Scholars. The scholarship is the premier graduate scholarship for aspiring public service leaders in the United States.
Brussel Faria is majoring in ethnicity, race, and migration while completing premed studies. She has participated in numerous health equity research projects and is a named author on a study that evaluated psychotherapy services for Native American communities. She intends to pursue an MD and is dedicated to crafting health-care policy founded in patients’ lived experiences and public-health research.
Sabin studies political science, with a focus on urban politics, poverty, and inequality. He grew up in New Haven, and won a seat on New Haven’s city council, the Board of Alders, during his sophomore year at Yale. He has also served as the director of the Progressive Caucus in the Connecticut General Assembly for the past two years. After college, he intends to pursue a JD so that he can represent and advocate for low-income families.
Four receive Goldwater Scholarships
Four juniors—Daniel Chabeda, Megan He, Ronald Hood, and Sarah Zhao—are among the 410 college students from across the nation to receive Goldwater Scholarships for the 2021–22 academic year. The scholarships, named in honor of the late US senator Barry Goldwater, encourage outstanding students to pursue research careers in the fields of the natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics.
Chabeda, who is majoring in chemistry, conducts research in carbon-neutral fuel production and plans to pursue a PhD in theoretical chemistry. Megan He is double-majoring in environmental engineering and global affairs, and plans to pursue a PhD in environmental engineering. Hood is majoring in molecular biophysics and biochemistry with a certificate in data science, and plans to pursue a PhD in biophysics. Zhao, a statistics and data science major considering a second major in mathematics, conducts research in statistics theory and optimization and plans to pursue a PhD in statistics and data science.
