Studio honors Davenport alumnus
Last fall marked the opening of the Davenport Innovation Studio, sponsored by the Class of ’55 in honor of David McCullough ’55. The effort, which establishes a novel creation space for students, was a collaboration among the Center for Engineering Innovation and Design (CEID), the Tsai Center for Innovative Thinking at Yale (Tsai CITY), the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Yale College, and Davenport students. The space hosts 3-D printers, woodworking, electronics, and textile creation tools. The space is open to both Davenport and Pierson students, located in the Davenport basement adjacent to the pottery studio and printing press.
Artists bring ‘lux’ to Schwarzman Center
On Friday, December 15, the American Modern Opera Company (AMOC*) lit up Commons with its performance of El Niño: Nativity Reconsidered—a modern interpretation of the nativity story. Preceding the concert, Gary Ginstling ’88, president and CEO of the New York Philharmonic, led a discussion with leading soprano Julia Bullock and AMOC* cofounder and artistic director Zach Winokur. This mobile chamber music arrangement of American composer John Adams’s inimitable work, created and conducted by Christian Reif, was first performed at the Met Cloisters in 2018.
A strong year for fellowships
The Office of Fellowships encourages students to complement their Yale studies through summer and postgraduate fellowships. Each year, students use fellowships to carry out a vast range of independent research projects, public service projects, and internships. It also supports students through the application processes for nationally competitive fellowships. As of January, five Rhodes scholars, five Marshall scholars, and a Churchill scholar will be heading to the UK for postgraduate study, and seven Schwarzman Scholars will start their MA in global affairs at Tsinghua University in China.
