Exhibit traces Yale Band’s history

A display of photographs, memorabilia, and correspondence in the college dean’s office traces the Yale Band’s history from 1928 to the present through its different stages—musical, organizational, and even sartorial. At the October 18 opening, Director of University Bands Tom Duffy led an impromptu guided tour for 60 past and present band members, telling stories about the band’s early and wartime years and its recent past. The exhibit will remain open until June.

New recess offers much-needed break

Students in Yale College enjoyed for the first time a five-day fall break that began October 24 and ran through October 28. A block party kicked things off the first night of the break, with artists, live bands, and booths from registered student organizations lining High Street, just outside Old Campus. Students who stayed in New Haven snapped up free or specially priced seats for the Met Opera’s broadcast of Othello, buses to New York city, and tickets to local movies; or they attended workshops on listening and note-taking, writing, and language-learning strategies. Faculty led field trips to Walden Pond in Massachusetts; to the Cloisters Museum in New York; to the Canadian Appalachians; and to other locations.

International students enjoy Thanksgiving meals

Every Thanksgiving, the Office of International Students and Scholars pairs international students with local families for a traditional Thanksgiving meal. OISS coordinates a number of programs that connect international students and scholars with members of the local community, giving them opportunities to learn more about US culture, improve language ability, and make new friends. Through its Community Friends of Yale International Students, it matches Yale international students with local hosts who provide an introduction to US culture and to the New Haven area. Hosts and students keep in touch throughout the academic year and meet occasionally to share a meal or activity, planting the seeds for a potentially lifelong friendship.
