New dean of Yale College
Jonathan Holloway ’95PhD has been appointed as the next dean of Yale College, effective July 1. Professor Holloway specializes in post-emancipation United States history with a focus on cultural and intellectual history. A professor of history and American studies and a former master of Calhoun College, he takes up his new role as dean of Yale College just as President Salovey has appointed a new dean of the Graduate School and an inaugural dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The expanded administration will allow Dean Holloway to focus on the quality of undergraduate education, including academic curriculum and student life, and to play a key role in leading the formation of two new residential colleges.
Two named residential college deans
Sarah Mahurin ’11PhD has been appointed dean of Timothy Dwight College. Mahurin, a former recipient of a Prize Teaching Award from the Graduate School, has published articles on American and African American literature and has taught courses on these subjects both at Yale and at Wesleyan, where she has served as a visiting assistant professor of English and African American studies since 2011.
Jessie Royce Hill has been appointed as the next dean of Silliman College. An award-winning journalist, her work has appeared in newspapers, magazines, and radio, including both WGBH–Boston and National Public Radio. Since 2006, Ms. Hill has been an associate director of Yale’s undergraduate admissions, where she has also served as director of on-campus interviewing.
Calhoun College has new master
Julia Adams has been appointed as the next master of Calhoun College. Professor Adams is a leading historical sociologist who teaches and conducts research in the areas of state formation, social theory and knowledge, gender and family, and early modern European politics. Currently serving as deputy provost for the social sciences and for faculty development and diversity, she has previously chaired the sociology department and directed the division of the social sciences as well as the International Affairs Council and Fox Fellowship Program, both at the MacMillan Center.
