Four new history professors
Among the 51 ladder faculty who joined the FAS in 2017 are four new professors in the Department of History: Sergei Antonov, Deborah Coen, Samuel Moyn, and Carolyn Roberts. As they begin their second term, they share some reflections on their first semester at Yale:
Sergei Antonov, who specializes in modern Russia in the late imperial and early Soviet period: “So far, it’s been a magical experience. The students are extraordinarily intelligent and hardworking, eager to be helpful as I learn my way around Yale.”
Deborah Coen, whose research interests include the history of modern physical and environmental sciences: “What most amazes me is that this big research university has the feel of a small town—it has been remarkably easy to get to know colleagues and students from other departments and schools, from forestry to architecture. As a historian of science, I’m used to talking across disciplinary borders; but there’s an intellectual energy at Yale that inspires people to forge new connections.”
Samuel Moyn, who is appointed jointly in the FAS Department of History and Yale Law School, studies modern European intellectual history, the history of human rights, and legal theory: “Yale is a genuine fellowship of scholars and students. Learning how much is available at this incredible place has offered me a window on what a top research university can offer.”
Carolyn Roberts, who is appointed jointly in history and African American studies, researches medicine, race, and slavery in the Atlantic world: “Being appointed in multiple units has allowed me to see how dynamic, intellectually generous, and cross-disciplinary the FAS is. Each week I find myself in rich dialogue with individuals from different departments and backgrounds. My colleagues’ enthusiasm for research and teaching
is infectious.”
