Alumnus is new FAS dean of science

Jeff Brock ’92 joined the Yale faculty as professor of mathematics on July 1, 2018, and began his term as the FAS dean of science on January 1, 2019. Brock spent the last decade at Brown University, where he founded Brown’s Data Science Initiative, chaired the Department of Mathematics, and played a central role in revitalizing the undergraduate math curriculum. As FAS dean of science, Brock will oversee the nine FAS biological and physical science departments; work with the other FAS divisional deans to support and integrate research and teaching in the humanities, social sciences, sciences, and engineering and applied sciences; and play a central role in implementing the president’s university-wide science strategy.

New facilities offer cutting-edge technology

Yale faculty, staff, and students can now make use of two new cutting-edge facilities: the Franke Family Digital Humanities Laboratories (or DHLab), located in Sterling Memorial Library, and the Brain Imaging Center (BIC), located in Dunham Laboratory on Hillhouse Avenue. The DHLab, generously funded by Barbara and Richard Franke ’53 and the GoizuetaFoundation, opened its doors on October 9 as a center for engagement with the humanities via technology. The BIC, which is equipped with a state-of-the-art fMRI scanner, will, according to President Peter Salovey, “promote and facilitate cutting-edge and interdisciplinary human neuroscience research, training, and teaching in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.” On December 7, Salovey inaugurated the center by entering the fMRI machine and using virtual scissors controlled by his mind to cut a digital ribbon.

Professor publishes biography of Frederick Douglass

2018 marked the bicentenary of Frederick Douglass’s birth, and the publication of a new biography of the prominent abolitionist, statesman, and writer by David Blight, the Class of 1954 Professor of American History. Frederick Douglass, Prophet of Freedom was inspired by Blights discovery of a private collection of Douglasss manuscripts not yet seen by other historians, the core of which were ten scrapbooks compiled by one of Douglasss sons. The biography was recognized as one of the top ten books of the year by the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and TIME
