Welcoming new faculty
Thirty-five new ladder faculty members join the FAS for the 2022–23 academic year. In addition, 12 new members of the instructional faculty join us on full-time, multi-year appointments. This cohort represents disciplines ranging from sociology to Slavic languages and literatures; music to molecular biophysics and biochemistry; African American studies to political science; and more. Among the new members of the ladder faculty, 25 join the FAS at the assistant professor level and are rising stars in their fields. Another ten come to Yale with tenure and are among the most accomplished senior scholars in their disciplines.
New deans for science and social science
On July 1, the FAS divisions of social science and science welcomed new deans. Kenneth Scheve, Dean Acheson Professor of Political Science and Global Affairs, has been appointed FAS dean of social science. Scheve is an expert in international and comparative politics, and he previously served as deputy director for academic affairs at the Jackson Institute for Global Affairs. Larry Gladney, professor of physics and the Phyllis A. Wallace Dean of Diversity and Faculty Development in the FAS, will serve as FAS dean of science. Gladney, a noted cosmologist and expert in experimental particle physics, will continue as FAS dean of diversity and faculty development.
FAS and SEAS faculty honored for community leadership
Four faculty members have received the FAS Dean’s Award for Diversity and Belonging, honoring their contributions to the FAS community: Ruth Blake, professor of earth and planetary sciences, chemical and environmental engineering, and of the environment; Michael Loewenberg, professor of chemical and environmental engineering; Kathryn Slanski, senior lecturer in humanities and in Near Eastern languages and civilizations; and Claudia Valeggia, professor of anthropology. The award recognizes their teaching, mentoring, and research that have made transformative contributions to inclusion and belonging in the FAS.
