Grant will aid reforestation program

The Environmental Leadership & Training Initiative (ELTI), an F&ES-based program that makes the latest tools and research in forest restoration and sustainable management accessible to the people who manage tropical landscapes, has received a $4.9 million grant from the Arcadia Fund to continue its work. Through field-based training, leadership-related support for alumni, and an innovative online education program, ELTI has reached more than 5,000 individuals—including landholders and farmers, practitioners, and policymakers across Latin America and Southeast Asia—since 2006. These resources have helped improve the local knowledge and capacity to conserve and restore forests and tree cover that, in turn, support biodiversity and livelihoods in regions that have endured forest cover loss and land degradation. The new grant represents Arcadia’s third gift in support of ELTI.

Soil expert promoted to full professor

Mark Bradford, an expert in soil and ecosystem science at F&ES, was recently promoted to full professor with tenure. Bradford, who first came to Yale in 2009, studies how land management and climate change is affecting plants, animals, and microorganisms in agricultural, grassland, and forest systems—and how, in turn, these effects influence the climate system and ecosystem health. He has built an international reputation, publishing more than 120 papers, including in the world’s top scientific journals, while also mentoring numerous doctoral students, master’s students, and postdoctoral fellows. “He is an outstanding scholar, teacher, and community member, bringing international recognition to F&ES and Yale,” said F&ES dean Indy Burke.
