As a reminder, effective July 1, the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies changed its name to the Yale School of the Environment (YSE). Simultaneously, to honor the school’s founding mission and in recognition of the ongoing importance of forestry, we have established the Forest School at the Yale School of the Environment.

Environmental justice scholar returns to Yale

Dorceta Taylor ’85MFS, ’91PhD, one of the nation’s preeminent scholars in the field of environmental justice, has been named full professor at the Yale School of the Environment. Taylor is a leading expert in the field of institutional diversity and workforce dynamics in the environmental sector. Her research interests also include urban agriculture, food access, and food insecurity. Her watershed 2014 study on the state of diversity in nearly 200 environmental organizations in the United States brought into focus the staggering lack of people of color in the field and pushed many prominent organizations to commit to increasing diversity in their workforces. That report helped several leading organizations make institutional commitments to increasing diversity in their workforces.  Taylor comes to Yale from the University of Michigan, where she was the James E. Crowfoot Collegiate Professor of Environmental Justice at the School for Environment and Sustainability. She began her tenure at YSE on July 1.

Rising star in industrial ecology joins YSE

The school also recently announced that Yuan Yao, whose research examines the environmental and economic impacts of emerging technologies and industrial processes, has been named assistant professor of industrial ecology and sustainable systems. By integrating interdisciplinary approaches from the fields of industrial ecology and sustainable engineering, as well as data analytics and systems modeling, Yao has developed techniques that promote more sustainable engineering approaches and policies. Yao joined the YSE faculty on July 1 from North Carolina State University, where she was an assistant professor of sustainability science and engineering.
