Dean speaks at Democracy Summit
Dean Heather K. Gerken gave remarks at the American Bar Association’s annual conference in Chicago in August. Gerkenoutlined how legal educators’ enduring commitment to the rule of law has sparked a renewed focus on the best traditions of lawyering—engaging across divides, professionalism, integrity, and mutual respect—in a moment of rapid change and intense polarization.
Professors appointed to faculty chairs
Three faculty members—Fiona Doherty ’99JD, John D. Morley ’06JD, and David Schleicher—were appointed to endowed professorships. Doherty, a legal scholar and law professor who founded a Yale-based criminal justice clinic, has been appointed the Nathan Baker Clinical Professor of Law. Morley, a leading expert on business organization, investment management, and trusts and estates has been appointed the Augustus E. Lines Professor of Law. Schleicher, whose research focuses on local government law, land use, federalism, state and local finance, and urban development, has been named the Walter E. Meyer Research Professor of Property and Urban Law.
Pipeline program completes first year
The Launchpad Scholars Program, which launched in 2022, expands access to the legal profession by ensuring that excellent applicants from all backgrounds gain the tools and resources they need to successfully apply to law school. In June, the first cohort of scholars spent a week in New Haven for the program’s capstone Residential Institute. Scholars participated in mock classes and skills workshops, visited legal employers, and networked with Yale Law students, faculty, and admissions officers. The Launchpad Scholars Program is the second pipeline-to-law-school program established at Yale Law School during the tenure of Dean Heather K. Gerken.
