Scene on CampusSwing shiftWintertime is officially down time for Yale’s golf teams, but the golf technology center at Payne Whitney Gymnasium lets players keep up with their game on a putting green and a virtual golf simulator. Men’s captain Ben Wescoe ’10 and Ryan Torres, a sixth grader at St. Martin de Porres Academy, took advantage of the simulator on a January day to work on Torres’s swing. (Members of the men’s team act as mentors for students at St. Martin de Porres through a national volunteer program called The First Tee.) Torres says the simulator is useful for feedback on how hard he’s hitting the ball. Wescoe is equally enthusiastic about another feature, which lets players experience rounds of simulated golf at some of the world’s great courses. “It’s pretty cool to be in New Haven in the dead of winter and play a round at Pebble Beach,” he says.
