First the Yankee Doodle disappeared ("The Death of the Doodle?" March/April 2008). Then Mory's shut down for a year and a half ("Struggling Mory's Closes Its Doors," March/April 2009). Now Rudy's Bar and Grill is being displaced, after 76 years of serving town and gown at 372 Elm Street. Owner Omer Ipek and his landlord couldn't come to terms on a new lease. The bar closed at the end of July, but will reopen in October at Chapel and Howe streets, in a storefront that most recently housed a restaurant offering a "chic vegetarian experience." Don't worry, though: the well-worn paneling, furniture, and bar are all making the move. "When you get there, you'll feel like you're at Rudy's," Ipek told the New Haven Independent, except "the bathroom will be cleaner."
