Last spring we asked whether Tom Perriello ’96, ’01JD, was a new kind of congressman “or just the kind who doesn’t get reelected” (“The Virginia Experiment,” May/June 2010). It’s now official: the first-term Democrat did not get reelected to his House seat in rural western Virginia. In a midterm election that saw big Republican gains, 28-year House veteran John Spratt ’69 (D-SC) was also unseated. And despite winning the GOP nomination, Alaska Republican Joe Miller ’95JD lost to Republican incumbent Lisa Murkowski, who waged a write-in campaign. All told, the election resulted in two fewer Eli House members, for a total of ten; two new senators, for a total of eight; and two new governors.
