Machu Picchu partnership established

Three months after signing a deal that calls for Yale to return its collection of potsherds, stone tools, and other materials from Machu Picchu to Peru ("Machu Picchu Artifacts to Return to Peru," January/February), the university has formally established a partnership with the Universidad Nacional de San Antonio Abad del Cusco (UNSAAC) to create a center where the artifacts will be conserved, studied, and displayed. The UNSAAC-Yale International Center for the Study of Machu Picchu and Inca Culture will be in Cusco, near the ancient site excavated a hundred years ago by Hiram Bingham '98.

University will return baseball gift

Yale has agreed to return $1 million to Industrial Enterprises of America, the bankrupt company whose CEO, John Mazzuto '70, gave the university at least $1.5 million for its baseball program. Prosecutors say he stole the money from the company ("Donor's Gift Linked to Fraud Charge," July/August 2010). Mazzuto goes on trial for larceny and fraud in March. Yale has not said whether it will remove Mazzuto's name from the practice field and head coach's position he endowed.

Residential colleges approved by city

New Haven's Board of Aldermen approved zoning changes in January that will allow Yale to build two new residential colleges on Prospect Street north of the Grove Street Cemetery ("New Colleges Aim to Match the Old," July/August 2009). Although construction will not begin until donations are secured to pay for the colleges, demolition on the site is already under way.
