After eight weeks at number one in national hockey polls, the men's hockey team returned to earth in January, losing four out of five road games and their hold on first place in the ECAC. The team had a 20–5 record going into their last four regular-season games in mid-February.
The women's basketball team snapped a seven-game losing streak in style on December 18 when they beat Florida State—then ranked 15th in the country—91–85. The Yale women were second in the Ivy League halfway through conference play in February.
In a clash of undefeated squash teams the Yale women (second in the nation) beat Harvard (first) on February 12 to win the Ivy title and the top spot in the nation going into the national championship tournament. The men beat Harvard the same day to win their own Ivy title, their record marred only by a loss to top-ranked Trinity.
The men's fencing team faced Harvard for an Ivy title at the conference tournament in Princeton on February 13, but lost 14–13 in a match decided on the last point of the last bout.
