Appointed

School of Public Health professor Elizabeth Howe Bradley ’96PhD is the new master of Branford College. Bradley directs Yale’s Global Health Leadership Initiative. Her husband, Branford alumnus John Bradley ’81, will be the college’s associate master. The Bradleys succeed Steven and Susan Smith, who served as master and associate master for 15 years.

Elected

Three new trustees join the Yale Corporation, the university’s governing board, this summer. The Corporation elected Byron Auguste ’89 and Charles W. Goodyear IV ’80 as successor trustees; alumni elected E. John Rice Jr. ’88 as an alumni fellow. Auguste is a senior partner with management consultants McKinsey and Co. Goodyear is president of Goodyear Capital Corporation. Rice is founder and CEO of the nonprofit Management Leadership for Tomorrow.

Remembered

Steven Orszag, the Percey F. Smith Professor of Mathematics, died in New Haven on May 1 of leukemia. He was 68 years old. Orszag, who got his PhD in astrophysics from Princeton, was a pioneer in using computer models to better understand fluid dynamics.

Henry Merrill ’29, who was the oldest Yale graduate and the last member of his class, died on May 12 in North Branford, Connecticut. Merrill, a longtime class secretary, was 104.

Honored

Ruslan Medzhitov, the David W. Wallace Professor of Immunobiology at Yale, will share this year’s million-dollar Shaw Prize for medicine with two other researchers in France and California. The three were cited for “their discovery of the molecular mechanism of innate immunity, the first line of defense against pathogens.”
