Appointed

English and American studies professor Amy Hungerford is the new master of Morse College, succeeding Frank Keil. Hungerford, who studies post–World War II American literature, has taught at Yale since 1999. This past year she served as acting master of Calhoun College. She will be joined in Morse by her husband, Peter Chemery, who will serve as associate master; and their children Clare (10) and Cyrus (8).

Elected/Appointed

Two 1985 Yale College graduates are the newest members of the Yale Corporation, the university’s board of trustees. Internet executive Kevin Ryan ’85, a former CEO of DoubleClick and current CEO of Gilt Groupe, was elected to the Corporation by alumni this spring. Maureen Chiquet ’85,global CEO of the fashion company Chanel, was appointed by the Corporation to a term as a successor trustee.

Honored

John Lewis Gaddis’s book George F. Kennan, a life of one of the principal architects of US foreign policy after World War II, was awarded the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Biography. Gaddis, the Robert A. Lovett Professor of History, is an authority on the Cold War.

Remembered

Former Law School dean Louis Pollak ’48LLB died on May 8 in Philadelphia. He was 89. Pollak, a scholar of constitutional law, taught at Yale from 1955 to 1974 and was dean from 1965 to 1970. Later, he was dean of Penn’s law school and a US district judge in Pennsylvania.

Patricia Pessar, who cofounded Yale’s program in ethnicity, race, and migration, died of cancer in New Haven on May 10 at the age of 63. Pessar, an adjunct professor of anthropology, American studies, and African American studies, had taught at Yale since 1993.
