With the Branford College courtyard under construction, the Guild of Carillonneurs had to find another place for people to enjoy its summer concert series—a Yale tradition that dates to 1967. They settled on a spot almost as far above the ground as the Harkness Tower bells themselves: the rooftop terrace of the Loria Center—the new art history building on York Street, next to Paul Rudolph Hall. (Most alumni will remember Rudolph Hall as the Art & Architecture Building.)

About 50 people gathered on the terrace on July 13 to hear Ellen Dickinson ’97, ’99MusM, send a wave of music out with the evening breeze. Listeners came with picnic dinners, lawn chairs, and blankets. Adding to the festive mood was the panoramic view of New Haven—and a man in a car on High Street who honked his horn appreciatively at the conclusion of each piece. Given the street noise and the distance from Harkness, “it’s not the best listening space,” admits summer carillonneur Lynnli Wang ’15. “But it’s a really great view up there.”
