What’s it like to serve on the Association of Yale Alumni’s board of governors? Well, it doesn’t always require facemasks, boots, gloves, goggles, and hazmat suits, but you shouldn’t rule it out. On February 3, after a two-day board meeting, several members and other volunteers, aged 22 to 85, went to Queens, New York, to participate in the continuing cleanup after Superstorm Sandy. A total of 16 people—including family members, staff, and other alumni—took part in demolition work on two flood-damaged houses, in partnership with New York Cares. “We had people ripping out floorboards, ceilings, and wallboard full of mold and carrying off the debris,” says Lise P. Chapman ’81MBA, chair of the Yale Day of Service. If this—or perhaps a less slimy project with your fellow alums—sounds worthwhile, mark your calendar for this year’s Day of Service, May 11.
