The campus was on lockdown for several hours on November 25 after police received an anonymous call about a gunman headed toward Yale. The call was finally determined to be a hoax, but not before police and SWAT teams searched the Old Campus and Calhoun College on a second tip from a Yale employee who mistook a responding police officer for the purported gunman. Most students were away for Thanksgiving break.

The Yale College faculty voted in December to establish a faculty senate, something common at other universities but unprecedented in Yale’s 312-year history. The faculty asked President Salovey to appoint a committee that will propose a structure for the senate by December.

A professor on leave from the English department died in jail on November 24 after being arrested the day before during a domestic dispute with his husband. Police said that Sam See, an assistant professor at Yale since 2009, had been treated at Yale–New Haven Hospital for a cut over his eye before being taken to jail. The state medical examiner’s office had not announced a cause of death at press time, but did rule out trauma from the head wound. The marshals who oversee the jail said they saw no evidence of suicide. See, who focused on British and American modernist literature and sexuality studies, was remembered as “a brilliant and generous colleague” by fellow English professor Amy Hungerford.
