Light & VerityHoops on hold for WhiffA basketball player defects to the Whiffenpoofs. Julie BrownView full imageBrandon Sherrod still loves basketball. And he’ll be back. He just has something else he has to do next year. A 6-foot-6-inch forward and sometime starter for the Bulldogs who just finished his junior year, Sherrod is taking a year off from sports and studies to travel the world as a member of the Whiffenpoofs, Yale’s famed a cappella singing group. (It has become the norm recently for students to take a sabbatical from school during their Whiffenpoof year.) Sherrod first started singing in church choirs in his hometown of Bridgeport, Connecticut. “Music has been a passion of mine way before basketball came into the picture,” he said in an interview with Yale Sports Publicity. But rest easy, basketball fans; Sherrod will return for his final year of eligibility in 2015–16.
