Stepping down

After nine years as executive director of the Association of Yale Alumni, Mark Dollhopf ’77 is stepping down at the end of July. Dollhopf oversaw a new emphasis on shared-interest alumni groups, and he helped launch the Yale Day of Service. Deputy executive director Jenny Chavira ’89 will serve as acting director.

 

Shauna King, vice president for finance and business operations since 2006, will step down on August 31. President Peter Salovey ’86PhD credited her with “helping to move Yale to sound financial ground following the economic downturn of 2008.”

 

Elected

Alumni elected Eve Hart Rice ’73 as a fellow of the Yale Corporation, the university’s board of trustees, this spring. A psychiatrist, author, and philanthropist, Rice helped found the YaleWomen alumnae group in 2011.

Oktay Sinanoğlu (pictured), a professor emeritus of chemistry often called “the Turkish Einstein,” died on April 19. He was 80 years old. The son of a Turkish diplomat, Sinanoğlu was known for developing an influential theory on the electronic structure of molecules. He taught at Yale from 1960 to 1997.

 

Computer science professor and Saybrook College master Paul Hudak died of leukemia on April 29 at the age of 62. Hudak joined the computer science faculty in 1982 and served as chair of the department from 1999 to 2005. His research centered on programming languages and computers in music. He was master of Saybrook from 2009 until his death.

 

John Fleming Kelly ’47, ’50LLB, a longtime Yale alumni volunteer and chair of this magazine’s board of directors from 1985 to 1987, died on May 22 of complications from Alzheimer’s disease. He was 89. Kelly, an attorney in Denver, received the Yale Medal in 1985.
