When Calhoun College became Grace Hopper College on July 1, the college got a new coat of arms to reflect the life of its new namesake. The design includes a dolphin—yes, that’s a dolphin, as traditionally rendered in heraldry—which alludes to Hopper’s career as a Navy admiral. To commemorate her pioneering work in computers, a field of circles and rectangles suggests the ones and zeroes of binary code. The shield was designed by university printer John Gambell ’81MFA, in consultation with heraldry authority Stephen Scher ’56, ’66PhD, and was rendered by Jonathan Corum ’95.
