Hundreds of Native American artifacts in Yale’s Peabody Museum are being returned to the Mohegan tribe of Connecticut under an agreement signed in November. The items include a wooden succotash bowl (left), a wooden mortar, a doll, and a number of items found in a 1930s excavation at Uncasville by Yale and the state of Connecticut.

The university’s trustees approved the creation of the Yale Institute for Global Health in December. The institute will encourage collaboration and support work being done in global health at the schools of medicine, nursing, and public health and elsewhere at the university. “No one discipline can solve global health problems,” says School of Nursing dean Ann Kurth ’90MSN. “YIGH will provide a catalyzing center for these collaborations.” A search is under way for a faculty director for the institute.

The university voiced its opposition to two provisions in tax plans passed by the US House and Senate in the fall. Both versions of the bill include a 1.4 percent excise tax on endowment earnings that would affect Yale and a few other wealthy institutions, and the House version would require graduate students to pay taxes on their tuition waivers. At press time in mid-December, a conference committee was working out the differences in the bills.

The 135th edition of the Yale-Harvard football game this November will be played at Fenway Park, home of baseball’s Boston Red Sox, as Harvard Stadium undergoes renovations next year. This will be the first time since 1894 that The Game has not been played on Yale or Harvard’s home field.
