Louise Nevelson’s Atmosphere and Environment XI has a new home for the foreseeable future. After years of prominence in the Yale University Art Gallery’s sculpture garden, it was moved for the garden’s renovation and now stands in front of Street Hall, on Chapel Street—a piece of public art getting an even more public airing. Cast in 1971, and purchased by the gallery the same year, this eight-foot-tall piece was “made to be in dialogue with nature,” says Frauke V. Josenhans, associate curator of modern and contemporary art.

The renovation was completed in December, but Nevelson’s piece “will probably stay longer, given how complicated it is to move these large sculptures.” Approximate weight? 5,000 pounds.
