Appointed

Victoria M. Chun (left) has been appointed as the university’s director of athletics, physical education, and recreation. Since 2013, Chun has been vice president and director of athletics at Colgate University, where she was captain of the volleyball team as a student and later head volleyball coach. In announcing Chun’s appointment, President Salovey called her “a respected leader and a national advocate for excellence.” She will start work at Yale on July 1, succeeding longtime director Tom Beckett. 

Garth Ross will be the first executive director of Yale’s Schwarzman Center, a center for cultural programming and student life. Ross currently serves as vice president for community engagement at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, of which Schwarzman Center donor Stephen Schwarzman ’69 is a former chair. The center will open in 2020 in Commons and Memorial Hall.

Erwin Hauer ’57ArtS, who taught sculpture at the School of Art from 1957 to 1990, died on December 22 in Branford, Connecticut. He was 91. A native of Austria, Hauer was perhaps best known for modular geometric designs that he used to make light-diffusing partitions for modern architectural interiors, marketed under the name Continua in the 1950s and ’60s. He had brought some of the Continua designs back into production in recent years. 

Geoffrey C. Hazard Jr., a former Sterling Professor of Law, died on January 10. He was 88. Hazard, a scholar of legal ethics, taught at the Law School from 1971 to 1994; he later taught at the University of Pennsylvania and at the University of California Hastings College of the Law. In 1980 and 1981, he served as acting dean of the Yale School of Management.
