This is very shortly after he leaves Barcelona to come to Paris. He’s not at all a cubist painter at this point in his life. He’s a very young guy—around 19 years old. This is a promised gift of alumnus William Bernhard and his wife, Catherine Cahill. And look over here—here’s Vase, Gourd, and Fruit on a Table. Nine years later, and he’s already started to become the cubist we know. Then, here is one of Picasso’s most famous paintings. It’s called First Steps, a gift from alumnus Stephen Carlton Clark. If you’ve had a child—when you first help them learn to walk, that’s a moment! And this is much later than the others—1943. Near it is another, very late: 1963. So, you can come into this gallery as a member of the public, or you can come in as a member of the student body, and you can look at Picasso at any stage in his development.
