Sterling Professor of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry Joan Steitz was presented with the Lasker-Koshland Special Achievement Award in Medical Science in September. The award from the Lasker Foundation recognizes Steitz’s lifetime achievements in “pioneering discoveries in RNA biology, generous mentorship of budding scientists, and vigorous and passionate support of women in science.”

Four alumni of the Graduate School were awarded the Wilbur Lucius Cross Medal—the school’s highest honor—in October. The awardees are museum curator Elizabeth W. Easton ’89PhD (history of art); medical school dean Kelsey C. Martin ’91PhD (molecular biophysics & biochemistry), ’92MD; linguistics professor Marianne Mithun ’74PhD (linguistics); and university president Tan Eng Chye ’89PhD (mathematics).

Remembered

Economist Martin Shubik, who taught at Yale from 1963 to 2007, died at his home in Branford, Connecticut, on August 22. He was 92. Shubik, the Seymour H. Knox Professor Emeritus of Mathematical Institutional Economics at the School of Management, was a scholar of game theory whose interests ranged from behavior in committees and legislatures to defense policy to a theory of money.

Allan Wagner, the Rowland Angell Professor Emeritus of Psychology, died on September 28 at his home in North Haven, Connecticut. He was 84. Wagner came to Yale as an assistant professor in 1959 and spent his career at the university, focusing his research on associative learning and habituation. He served as chair of both the psychology and philosophy departments and as director of the Division of Social Sciences at Yale.
