Yale marked Veterans Day—and the 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I—with a week of film, music, lectures, and an exhibition. At the annual Veterans Day celebration (left), held this year in Battell Chapel, history professor Paul Kennedy reviewed Yale’s participation in the Great War and subsequent conflicts. “In 1917 and 1918, America stepped forward into a new role, and so, indeed, did Yale,” said Kennedy. “But the price in lives was a heavy one, and it is therefore very proper that we have stopped at this time to mark this sacrifice. As we walk away from our ceremony this afternoon, therefore, we should do so both in gratitude and humility. Maybe also walk away, finally, in the hope that one day we may cease to ravage this earth.”
