Women's soccer coach leaves amid allegations

Players at his former school accused him of sexual misconduct.

Women’s soccer coach Brendan Faherty left his job in late November, not quite a year after he replaced Rudy Meredith, who had been implicated by the FBI in the “Varsity Blues” admissions scandal. Faherty’s departure was announced on the same day the Yale Daily News published an article detailing former players’ allegations of impropriety and sexual misconduct while he was coach of the University of New Haven women’s soccer team, from 2002 to 2009.

“On November 18, 2019, the Yale Daily News shared deeply troubling information with the university, none of which was made known to the university in the interview and vetting process,” Yale spokesman Nate Nickerson said in a prepared statement. “As of November 20, 2019, Mr. Faherty is no longer employed by the university.” The university did not specify whether Faherty resigned or was fired. In a statement from his attorney, Faherty denied the allegations and said he was “deeply disappointed” by them. Assistant coach Sarah Martinez, who joined the staff in January, has been named head coach.
