Appointed

Alicia Schmidt Camacho (left) will know her way around when she becomes head of Ezra Stiles College this summer. Schmidt Camacho, chair of the ethnicity, race, and migration program, has been associate head of Stiles for the last 12 years while her husband, Stephen Pitti ’91, was head of college. (Pitti will now become associate head.) Schmidt Camacho studies migration, social movements, and cultural politics in North America.

Florie Seery, who has supervised Broadway and off-Broadway productions for 15 years as general manager of the Manhattan Theatre Club, has been named managing director of Yale Repertory Theatre and associate dean of the School of Drama. She succeeds Victoria Nolan, who is stepping down this summer after 27 years.


Elected

Alumni elected Carlos Moreno ’70, a former California Supreme Court justice and former US ambassador to Belize, to a six-year term on the Yale Corporation, the university’s board of trustees. Moreno, now an independent mediator, was a cofounder of the Yale Latino Alumni Association. He was selected over Maurie McInnis ’96PhD, the incoming president of Stony Brook University.


Remembered

Manuel Duran, who taught Spanish literature at Yale from 1960 to 1996, died on April 3. He was 95. A native of Barcelona, he earned his PhD at Princeton and taught at Smith before coming to Yale. An authority on the writers of the Spanish Golden Age, he wrote two major books on Cervantes.

Painter and professor William Bailey ’57MFA, known for his coolly wrought still lifes of eggs, cups, bowls, and vases, died on April 13. He was 89. Bailey, the Kingman Brewster Professor Emeritus of Art, taught at the School of Art from 1969 to 1995 and served as dean from 1974 to 1975.
