Twice the handsome

Yale's mascot meets his uncle and predecessor.

It was an occasion for the history books: the first meeting of Handsome Dan XIX and his predecessor, Handsome Dan XVIII. The emeritus Dan, who goes by Walter, is now enjoying early retirement in Brooklyn. But he came for the men’s lacrosse home opener on February 19, where he met up with the current Dan, known as Kingman. (Walter is Kingman’s uncle on his mother’s side.) Besides posing with a statue of Handsome Dan I, the pair enjoyed a frolic on the Yale Bowl field. “They got along great,” says Kingman’s human companion, Kassandra Haro ’18. “They’re besties now.”
