Speaking through a translator, Zelenskyy talked about the war with Russia and answered questions from students. Two undergraduates and a group called Elis for Rachael filed a class-action lawsuit against the university on November 30, claiming that the policies for students who withdraw from Yale College and later seek reinstatement discriminate, illegally, against those with mental health disabilities. The suit alleges, for instance, that Yale’s policies deter students from seeking mental health treatment accommodations. University spokeswoman Karen Peart said in a statement that Yale “is confident that our policies comply with all applicable laws and regulations. Nonetheless, we have been working on policy changes that are responsive to students’ emotional and financial wellbeing.” On December 7, Yale and the plaintiffs asked the court to put the proceedings on hold while they “discuss ways to resolve the complaint and achieve their mutual goals.” |

Elis for Rachael (www.ElisForRachael.org) is a non-profit organization of Yale alumni, family and friends of first-year student Rachael Shaw-Rosenbaum (BR ’24), which formed spontaneously very shortly after her on-campus death by suicide in March, 2021. Some of us took mental health leaves of absence as students, and are all-too-familiar with the unnecessary obstacles Yale has long placed in the paths of students seeking adequate treatment. Our goal is to ensure that Rachael’s is the last death by suicide of a Yale student. To date we have collected and distributed over $13,000 to support seven students on mental health leaves of absence.
