Light & VerityCourt of honorA space on Science Hill named for Josiah Willard Gibbs. Truth be told, few people mourned the loss of Gibbs Research Laboratories when the building was torn down in 2017. But the demolition left the campus without a place commemorating the life and work of Josiah Willard Gibbs, Class of 1858, ’63PhD, the scientist and Yale professor whom Albert Einstein called “the greatest mind in American history.” Now, Gibbs is again getting his due, with a redesigned public space on Science Hill that has been named Gibbs Court. Appropriately for Gibbs, who did influential work in physics, chemistry, and mathematics, the court is flanked by Sloane Physics Laboratory, Sterling Chemistry Laboratory, and Kline Tower—which now houses the math department.
